Myths About Domestic Abuse

Myth: You have a police report to get help with domestic violence.

False: You are not required to make a police report to receive help. Nobody will force you to file a report.

Myth: Police believe the first person that calls. If my abuser calls first, I will be arrested for domestic abuse.

False: New police investigations prioritize the safety of the victim. Officers are trained to understand the complexities of domestic abuse.

Myth: Without physical evidence on my body, police won’t believe me.

False: Abuse is more than physical trauma- it can be emotional, psychological, verbal, and sexual. Advocates are here to listen and help!

Myth: If you go into a shelter, DCF will automatically remove your kids.

False: Being in a shelter is not a reason for DCF to investigate you or remove children.

Myth: If you need a Protection Order, you can get free legal help.

True: An Advocate can help you find community resources that provide free legal assistance for DV victims.
