Empowering Domestic Violence Victims to Survive, Rise, and Thrive!

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors that adults and adolescents use to control their partners or family members.

Abusers use a variety of tactics to coerce, intimidate, threaten, and frighten their victims. The abusers may use control to purposely reduce their partner’s freedoms and strengthen their authority.

As I survived domestic violence myself, I realized how little to no support there is for people to escape the violence. In fact, many services victimize you and cause you more pain. I am living proof that YOU can survive!

I want help, what’s next?

Call a Domestic Violence Advocate, they will listen! An Advocate will talk to you about your situation without judgement. Domestic violence is not caused by drugs or alcohol, mental illness, being “provoked,” stress, or poor anger management. An Advocate will give you information and options so you can make the best decisions for you and your family.

Never confront an abuser!

  • The intensity of domestic violence may escalate when the abused person decides to leave the relationship because abusers may try to escalate their power and control tactics to force the woman to stay. The risk of domestic homicide is highest during the period of separation.
  • If you decide to leave, an Advocate will help you make a safety plan so you can be prepared and leave safely.
  • Victims often feel fearful; shame and self-blame, lack of money, resources and support, religious pressure to honor the marriage, pressure to keep the family together.

An Advocate can help you find resources such as shelter, food, medical care, clothing, counseling, and financial help.

  • Domestic violence victims often suffer from lower self-confidence, physical illness, disability, difficulty trusting self/others, and poverty. Despite the challenges, survivors find many courageous ways to survive.

I am thankful to be a part of an organization that truly fights for the rights of Domestic Violence survivors. They helped navigate me through the unexpected challenges I faced after I left my abuser. Their hard work and dedication inspired me to become an advocator for other Domestic violence survivors.
